Annual Report, January 1875
Regret at the retirement as Secretary of Miss Vernon.
The membership fee has risen from a minimum of 5s to a minimum of £5.
The Association's library is housed at Manchester High School. When the Association was founded in 1867, one of its main aims was to establish lectures but the cost of these proved to be prohibitive and they were discontinued in 1873. In Autumn 1874 they recommenced when Prof A S Wilkins gave a series of lectures on the science of language. Rev William Cunningham began a series of lectures on 12 January 1875 on economic science.
Another of the Association's main activities was holding classes in various subjects [details given]. They are now being held at the High School. Other classes are being held at Higher Broughton by permission of Rev R B Wright. Miss Cannan is the "Correspondent for the Association" and E M Brodie has given classes on Shakespeare.
An anonymous lady has provided money for financial prizes [details given] to those governesses who achieve the highest marks in the examinations which the Association conducts and has offered to pay the university fees of the two best examinees. The exams are marked by Prof Ward, Mr Toller and Mr Bentley. Details given of Mr Bentley's comments on the examinees.

Lord Selborne distributed prizes and certificates at one of two public meetings.
The Committee of the Association has established a fund to pay the fees of those governesses who wish to take Cambridge Local Exams. The foundation of schools, including Manchester High School and those schools in the Public Day School Trust necessitates some "guarantee of the attainments and competency of teachers to serve in these schools." The establishment of training colleges for "Governesses of High Grade Schools" is being considered by "influential people."
The Committee stated in its last report that the Public Day School for Girls [sic] was about to open at 369 and 371 Oxford Rd, Manchester. It opened on 19 January 1874.
Report of the High School Committee for the Year 1874
The school has 150 pupils, the maximum that can be taken and many applications have had to be rejected.
The teaching staff are Miss Day, seven assistant mistresses and 9 teachers of specific subjects [details given].
Last year two exhibitions have been awarded. An anonymous lady donated one for the daughter of a clergyman and this was awarded to Mary Geden. The other was awarded by Sir James Bardsley for the daughter of a doctor and this was awarded to Elizabeth Harrison. The Committee thanks Prof Wilkins and the Dean of Manchester for examining the candidates for these awards.
Edward Hecht examined the pupils who have music lessons.
Eleven pupils took the Cambridge Local Exams.
The Committee has promised that pupils will be periodically tested by "independent and competent Examiners." Two representatives of the Cambridge syndicate, Rev Stanley Walton and Rev Thomas Stevens conducted the exams. They were commended to the Committee by Rev G F Brown, the Secretary of the Syndicate.
Appeal for support from the people of Manchester.
Report on the Manchester High School for Girls by the Rev. Stanley Walton, MA, Vicar of Fenstanton and late Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge and Rev T Stevens, MA, Magdalen College Cambridge.
The exams were conducted in November 1874 and 145 girls were examined.
There are 6 teachers and the Headmistress, Miss Day. [There is a footnote stating that there were, as well as Miss Day, 7 Assistant Mistresses and 9 teachers of specific subjects]
Comments made on the following subjects: English Language, French, German, Latin, History, Geography, Arithmetic, Euclid.
The main general conclusions were that pupils were weakest on subjects which they had been taught before they went to the High School and that the school?s teachers were "really great and good work."
