Report of the High School Committee for the Year 1876

A Preparatory department has been opened at 274 Oxford St for girls aged 6 - 11. The Headmistress is Miss Whitlock, formally Head of the Upper School of the Home and Colonial School Society. There are 2 assistant mistresses and 40 girls.

The High School has 252 pupils.

General comments on the good attendance and health of pupils.

Mrs Corbett left after her marriage. Miss Welsh has become a Classics tutor at Girton College, Cambridge. Miss Woods and Miss Betham [details given of their academic qualifications] replace them.

Margaret Lomax has been awarded the Exhibition for the daughter of a clergyman and Anne Raynor has been awarded the Exhibition for the daughter of a doctor. Thanks to Prof Wilkins and Mr Style for examining the candidates.

The Salford School Board has sent an Exhibitioner to the school. The Salford School Board pay the fees.

Statistics given of successes in the Cambridge Local Examinations.

There are 21 teachers and 280 [sic] girls. The financial state of the school is good. There is need of better accommodation and the Committee has secured an option to buy a site at the corner of Rumford St and Dover St.
