Report of the High School Committee

In 1878 it was decided to hold the school exams in July instead of December because the Cambridge Local Examinations are held in December. It has been decided to end the school year in July.

This report covers the period June 1878 - July 1879. The financial statement, however, covers the period 1 January 1879 - 31 July 1879.

There are 303 pupils. There were 277 in July 1878. To accommodate the additional numbers, the school has taken 276 Oxford Rd. It provides accommodation for 60 girls in the High School and 40 girls in the Prep. It is not full.

Despite an outbreak of scarlet fever in Manchester, only one pupil got the disease.

The teaching staff consists of the Head Mistress, 17 assistant mistresses and teachers for other subjects, eg music. There is 1 teacher per 17 pupils which is higher than the recommended ratio of 1 per 20.

The library has 550 books. Thanks to R D Darbishire who has given books. ?20 per annum is spent on books for the library. Details given of arrangements for borrowing.

There are 5 Exhibitioners. They gain their places by competitive exam. There are 2 from the Manchester School Board, 2 from the Salford School Board and 1 from the Stockport School Board.

There are 85 pupils in the Prep. There were 79 in July 1878.

There have been several cases of scarlet fever in the Prep.

The success of the school has led to a consideration of plans to set up Branch Schools in other parts of Manchester.

The financial state of the school is good.
