It was sent to the school with a card explaining, "Soon after the landmine destroyed much of Grangethorpe in the Christmas holidays 1940, we were asked to help salvage books from the rubble of the library. Finally we were allowed to keep one book each. I chose this Lucretius which I used at university in 1942. It has recently been restored by an antique book restorer and I am pleased to return it to the library. Joan Newey [nee Silverwood, 1935 - 1942]."

A small brown exercise book kept in a blue folder which has embroidered in white on the front, "Boarding House Chronicle, MHSG."
Written by Muriel Alice Bedson and Constance May Gill.
It contains a handwritten record of activities and events which took place between 1 May 1901 and 12 March 1903 at the Manchester High School boarding house, 1 Addison Terrace, Victoria Park, Manchester.
At the back are short notes on the lives after leaving school of the following: Gertrude Potter, Rachel Barker, Jennie Blezard, Jessie Clarkson. The book also contains a hand written programme of a performance of a play, "Breaking the News."
