Form Button

A round button covered with yellow material. Each year, each class chose its own material to cover the button. A hair ribbon was worn to match. The buttons were known as blobs.

 

Guide Proficiency

Small cloth badges embroidered with various designs. Awarded after the successful performance of proficiency tests.

 

Swimming

A black shield with MHSG in capitals embroidered in gold, each letter in a quarter of the shield with a gold outline. This was worn on a swim suit.

 

Hockey

A black shield with MHSG in capitals embroidered in gold across the top, under the letters are two crossed hockey sticks with a ball.

 

Sport

An ivy leaf outlined in green, Manchester High School for Girls in capitals embroidered around it in black.

 

 

Old Girls' Federation Blazer Badges

MHSG in capitals embroidered as a monogram in gold. Under the monogram are the capital letters OGA.

A gold shield with a black band across the top, MHSG in capitals embroidered in gold on the band, beneath is a black ivy leaf with the capital letters OGF embroidered in gold.

METAL BADGES 

 

Deputy Head Girl

A silver green ivy leaf with silver coloured veins and a silver edge. Has a small chain and a pin.

 

Prefect

A black shield with a gold band diagonally across it, the word Prefect in capitals in gold across the band.

 

A silver shield with a blue outline band and a blue band horizontally across it. The words Manchester High School in capitals in silver around the edge and the word Prefect in capitals in silver on the horizontal band. A ring at the top of the badge for a black ribbon so that the badge could be worn round the neck.

Four of the badges are engraved on the back with the following:

Irene Carter, 1921 - 1922, 1923

Marie Hampson, 1925 - 1926

Eleanor Riley, 1929 - 1930

M I Hodgson, 1934 - 5           

 

Form Monitor

A small gold shield with MHSG in embossed capitals on a chevron. Attached to an elastic band and worn around the upper arm. 

 

Librarian

A yellow bar with Librarian in gold capitals on a black ground.

 

Deprtment badge

A rectangular badge divided diagonally black and yellow. 

 

125th Anniversary Badge

A small round badge with a green ivy leaf with 125 in gold and edged in gold. Around this on a green band is Manchester High School for Girls in capitals in gold.

 

Gym Eight

A small silver badge in the shape of an ivy leaf embossed with MHSG in capitals and the date presented. 

Three examples are dated as follows: 1909 1910, 1923, 1935.


The Thring Memorial Medal

A small medal engraved with a picture of the school building at Dover Street on one side and on the other in capitals, Manchester High School for Girls, Thring Memorial Cup held by Evelyn Buck, 1925.

 

Games

A black shield with a gold ivy leaf in the centre, MHSG in capitals at the top and Games 1923 in capitals at the bottom.

 

Lancashire Girls' Lawn Tennis League

A red shield with three gold lions and a white label across the topmost lion. Around the edge is a blue band with Manchester Girls' Lawn Tennis League in capitals.

 

Guides

A large gold coloured trefoil badge with a star inset and G G in capitals at the top and an empty scroll at the bottom. Made for the top of a banner pole. 

 

Water polo medals

Two water polo medals on red, white and blue ribbons. Like those awarded to the members of the school water polo team who finished in second place in the English Schools Swimming Association Under - 19 Girls' Water Polo Championship in 2004.

 

World War I Worker's Medal

A gold coloured crown with WW entwined underneath. Beneath this is a blue bar with Dover House in capitals in blue. Beneath this are a gold and a red rose. Around this a white band with Manchester War Hospital Supply Worksrooms, 1916 in capitals in gold. 

 

World War II Identity Disc

Small bronze coloured octagonal disc. On one side is engraved Manchester High School for Girls in capitals and beneath this is the number 375. On the other side is engraved the name and date of birth of the owner.

 

Royal Golden Jubilee Medal

A round gold coloured medal engraved on one side with the head of Queen Elizabeth II and around this Golden Jubilee, Elizabeth II, 1952 - 2002 in capitals. On the other side is a crown and around this The Queen's Golden Jubilee in capitals. 

 

Queen's 80th Birthday Medal

A round gold coloured medal engraved on one side with the head of Queen Elizabeth II and around this Elizabeth II, 80th Birthday 2006. On the other side are emblems of the United Kingdom. 

 

Manchester University

The Manchester University emblem hanging from a gold bar engraved with President 1948 - 49 in capitals.

A gold armband with a broad black stripe on the edge and another narrower stripe parallel to it. On the gold is the school badge and beside it  a green ivy leaf with OGA in capitals in gold. Across both badges is a gold scroll with Grangethorpe in capitals in black.

 

Beret

A black velour beret with the school badge.

 

Blazers

A black blazer with the school badge. 

 

A black blazer with the badge of the Old Girls' Association [sic].

A black gymslip. On the front are the school badge between a hockey badge [crossed hockey sticks and a ball under MHSG in capitals] and a cricket badge [a cricket bat, wickets and ball under MHSG in capitals].

 

Hat

A black velour hat with a school hatband around the brim.

 

Hatband

A gold ribbon with a double black stripe on the edge, the school shield and tied with a bow.

 

Hockey Belt

A gold belt with black edges.  


Scarves

3 black scarves with five pairs of narrow yellow stripes.

 

A yellow scarf with four pairs of narrow black stripes.

 

A yellow scarf with two stripes of yellow and white.

 

Silk Sash

A gold silk sash worn on Speech Day.

 

Sports Blouses

A yellow sports blouse of the 1990s.

 

A yellow sports blouse with the school logo of the years 1994 - 1999.

Two black sweaters of the 1960s with "Manchester High School" in large gold letters on the front.

 

A black sweater with the school logo of the 1980s, ie a gold ivy leaf with MHSG in capitals in gold around it and a gold circle around all.

 

A black sweater with the school logo of the years 1994 - 1999.

 

A black sweater with the school logo of the years 1999 - 2004.

 

Ties

A gold silk tie with two thin parallel diagonal stripes. 

 

A gold wool ground with two thin parallel stripes.

Bookmarks

A green leather bookmark embossed with the school logo and 1874 - 1999 in gold. Made to mark the 125th anniversary of the school.

A black leather bookmark embossed with the school logo, Manchester High School for Girls, Sixth Form Leavers, 2009 in gold. Made to mark the leaving of the sixth form in 2009. 

A black bookmark embroidered with a gold cross on one end and a flower on the other. Made for reading the Bible.

 

Cloth Bag

A yellow cloth bag embroidered with MHSG in capitals in red and white and KLC in capitals in red. The latter is placed between 2 felt ivy leaves. This was made for Kathleen Cottrell by a girl or girls in the Preparatory Department and was given to the archive after Kathleen Cottrell's death in 2001.

 

Needle case

A green needle case with purple decorative stitching and a white lining made in about 1939 by Joan Parker [nee Marland]

 

Swimming Shield

A wooden shield with a scroll at the top inscribed with "Championship Gala 1969," asilver coloured oval surrounded laurel leaves with the Manchester coat of arms surrounded by an inscription, "Manchester Schools Swimming Association" and a metal shield at the bottom inscribed with "Secondary Schools Champion Girls, presented by the Baths and Laundries Committee."
