Regret at the death of Margaret Ashton in October 1937.

Welcome to the governing body to Joan Coatman. Congratulations to Mr Padmore on being awarded an honorary LL.D by Manchester university on the occasion of the centenary of the Law Society. Congratulations to Dr J Myers on being appointed Principal of the Manchester College of Technology.

 

The guests on Founders' Day and Speech Day were Rev Dr Manson and Miss Eleanor Rathbone MP respectively. Summaries given of the themes of their speeches.

Student teachers have done teaching practice at the school.

Miss Clarke has participated in the Board of Education investigation into the Higher School Certificate.

 

The Royal Schools of Music have appointed the school as an examination centre.

General comments on scholarships and exhibitions and exam results.

Details given of sport successes. No awards for individual gymnastic cups were made this year. One innovation was the replacement of the Gymnastic Eight with the award of certificates to all leavers who have achieved "a good standard" in gymnastics. A gymnastic team took part in a demonstration of physical training organised by the Ling Association "for the benefit of the medical profession."

Two pupils have died during the year, Ruth Owen aged 15 and Marjorie Hillson aged 10.

£8,000 has been paid or promised for the building fund. A bazaar is planned for November 1939 to raise money.

The school participated in the Manchester Civic Centenary and the pageant which was organised to welcome the king and queen to Manchester.

General comments on school visits including a French language course in Bruges.

A Film Society has been set up.

The School Guide Company celebrated its 21st birthday in February 1938. Some details given of their activities.

There was a parents' meeting in the summer term which evinced "lively interest" in school uniform and discipline.

Singer Sewing Co gave a course of lessons at the school.
