1940

A small slip of paper has been bound into the front of the Report which is dated 9 January 1941 and which records that the new school buildings were destroyed "by enemy action" on the night of 22 - 23 December 1940. Temporary accommodation has been secured at the South Manchester School for Boys and other premises are being investigated.

Report

When war broke out the school was evacuated to the Warehouseman and Clerks? School, Cheadle Hulme. Thanks to the Head Master, Mr Lockhart. The VI Form and the Prep have joined their counterparts at Cheadle Hulme School. Numbers fell from about 500 to about 400. Of these 250 were billeted at Cheadle Hulme but nearly 100 have returned home. Thanks to the ladies who organised the billets taking care to find suitable accommodation and changing accommodation which was unsuitable.

 

Regret at the resignations from the governing body of Dr Padmore, Miss G Ayre and Mrs Wilde. Welcome to Councillor Kershaw.

 

Founders' Day was held in the Congregational Church at Cheadle Hulme and the speaker was Rev J Phillips. A "modest Speech Day" was held at Cheadle Hulme School. The speaker was Mrs Mather. The prize winners donated their money to war charities.

Few competitive sports matches have been possible, The regular use of Cheadle Hulme's swimming pool was appreciated.

The severe weather in January and February [1940] lead to many absences.

Miss Malloch has become the guide captain. A School War Savings Society has been set up. Money has been sent to the Finland Fund.
