A Retrospect of the School's History
Speech by Professor Wilkins given at Speech Day and reported in the Manchester Guardian. Describes the foundation of the school, only four of the original governors are still alive. They are Mrs Darbishire, Margaret Gaskell, Edward Donner, A Wilkins. Tribute was paid to the work of others, Bishop Fraser, Mr R Darbishire, Mrs Roby, Elizabeth Day.
Elizabeth Day did not feel well enough to speak at the ceremony.
Description of the building of the new school at Dover St and the establishment of the feeder schools at Pendleton and North Manchester High School.
To date Manchester High School has had 3, 680 pupils, 55 have won open scholarships, 25 have taken the Cambridge Tripos, 8 have passed the Oxford finals exams with honours, 21 have gained honours degrees from Victoria University, 7 have gained honours degrees from London University, 12 have gained ordinary degrees from Victoria University, 4 have become heads of girls' schools and 2 have become lecturers at Cambridge.

Old Girls' Association Meeting, 1898
A conversazione was held to mark Elizabeth Day's retirement. It was attended by 300 old girls. The President, Madeline Mellin gave a speech accounting for the money which had been subscribed for her present. The names of the subscribers had been listed in an album which had been illuminated by Mary Wroe. Gifts were presented by Mrs Scott. Elizabeth Day gave a speech of thanks.

The Debating Society
The Debating Society has been revived.
Debate held: "In earnestness, industry and thought the people of the north surpass those of the south." Proposed by Hilda Johnstone, opposed by Mildred Taylor. Motion carried.
The Golden Rule Society
The Society has been "languishing" and no sewing meetings have been held but flowers and magazines have been sent to Ardwick
Miss Duffield?s Sewing Class
The class made gifts for Elizabeth Day.
Visitors
The following have visited the school [details given]: Lucy Salmon, History Professor, Vasar College, USA; Mr Hoyle, Curator of Owens College Museum. Mr Hoyle gave a lecture on Egyptology.
Drama Visits
Girls have been to see productions of Shakespeare given by the drama company of Mr Benson [details given].
Christmas Party
A Christmas Party was given for the boys and girls in the classes on Miss Harrison and Miss Rhys. The rest of the school also had a party with entertainment including the performance of a French play. Appreciation of the work of Miss Adamson and Miss Kett.
Spring Term
There has been a substantial increase in the number of pupils.
A new form, Lower Fifth Remove has been created for pupils taking the Lower Certificate of the Oxford and Cambridge Joint Board.
A Boarding House at Victoria Park has been set up under Miss Shannon.
On Founders? Day the speakers were Dr Wilkins and Canon Hicks. Charles Rowley gave a lecture on art as part of the Founders' Day celebrations.

Conference on Secondary Education at Oxford
The Conference was attended by Miss Burstall, Miss McCroben, Miss Steedman.
Chorlton Literary Union
Miss Burstall read a paper on "The Unseen in History."
Bowden
Miss Burstall presented the prizes at Bowden School.
University Settlement, Ancoats
Miss Dendy gave a lecture on Florence at the Settlement.
School Badge
"It is desired that we choose some flower or leaf as the school badge; an ivy has been proposed. We should be glad of letters and suggestions on the subject from any of our girls, past or present. The plan has Miss Day?s approval and interest."

It has been suggested that waste ground at the end of the playground could be used for fives courts.
