!900 marks the jubilee of the High School movement and the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of North London Collegiate School. A celebration in St. Paul's cathedral is planned.

Parties

The Seniors gave a party for Miss Macklin and there was a fancy dress  party at Christmas.

 

Examinations

All the school had exams in arithmetic, geography and dictation and the Examination Forms had exams in special subjects.

The College of Preceptors' Examination, First Class was taken by Isa Craig who was second of all candidates in French and Clara Walker who was second of all candidates in drawing.

 

The English Education Exhibition

The English Education Exhibition was held in London in January 1900. Among the exhibits were Miss Rhys' history and other charts. The majority were taken to Paris for exhibit there. [See magazine for June 1900].

 

Theatre Trips

Girls were taken to see Shakespeare plays at the Benson matinees.

Miss Macklin's Farewell Party

Description of the leaving party for Miss Macklin. It included scenes from The Rivals acted by the following: Lydia Languish, Mary Reynolds, Lucie Geiler, Agnes Taylor. Presentations [details given] were made by Lizzie Edwards, Ruth Alexander.

Old Girls' Association Meetings. 1899

The Easter meeting was attended by Miss Day. There was also a concert, a picnic at Delamere forest and a visit to Chester.

 

Golden Rule Society

There was a whole school meeting at which the Society's activities were discussed. It was attended by Dr and Mrs Brown who represented the district nurses. About 30 shawls were crocheted for the district nurses.

 

Founders' Day

Description of Founders' Day. On the platform were Miss Burstall, Dr Wilkins, Canon Woodhouse. Miss Burstall read the chapter from Ecclesiasticus, "Let us now praise famous men". It is hoped that the head prefect will read it next year and that it will become a traditional reading at Founders' Day. Dr Wilkins outlined the history of the school and acknowledged the debt which it owed to Miss Day.

 

Music Teaching in School

Music teaching has been reorganised. Small groups of girls are being taught the piano. Two new teachers Mr Isidor Cohn and Fraulein Bruhn have been appointed. Miss Edith Robinson has a string class after school on Fridays which is open to old girls.

A grand piano has been presented anonymously. There has been a substantial increase in the number of pupils taking music lessons.

Leavers: Miss Macklin, Miss Thring.

New staff: Miss Lloyd, Miss Hiles, Miss Annie Barnes.

 

Scholarships and Exhibitions

Changes allowing for greater freedom have been made by a sub-committee of the governors. An English essay will be compulsory. Exhibition candidates will sit papers in elementary Latin and maths. For junior scholarships, elementary history will be compulsory, easy maths will be an option instead of either algebra or geometry and only one optional subject will be required. The importance of grammar is reduced and that of composition is increased.

Among those present were the following: Mrs W B Worthington, John Mather, Mr A E Steinthal, Mrs Steithal, Mrs Horace Lamb, Mrs Meek, Professor Hickson, Mrs Hickson, Mr W Hoyle, Mrs Hoyle, Mr T C Abbott, Mrs Abbott, Dr James Niven, Mrs Niven. Music led by Mrs Byron Cooper. Lucie Geiler read a paper on "Shakespeare as an Exponent of Nature." Other participants [details given] were the following: Muriel Hobdey, Ethel Dean, Jessie Taylor, Ethel Greengrass, Ruth Alexander, Zillah Smith, Marion Hawcridge, Gertrude Geiler, Marion Taylor, Constance Moakes, Kate Ashton.

Gifts

Details given of gifts to the school including a grand piano, silver badges for the prefects and gifts from Dr Wilkins and Miss Macklin.

 

Visitors

Mrs Sidgwick came to the school to meet members of a local association of women Cambridge students including Miss Coignou, Miss Welch, Mrs Hopkinson, Miss Hopkinson, Mrs Drummond, Miss Wilson, Miss Dymond, Miss Barcley, Miss J Sharp.

Other visitors were Miss Collier, lecturer from Newnham College, Mrs Vipont Brown, Dr Vipont Brown.

The [unnamed] registrar of the Victoria University also visited the school.

Lectures [details given] were given by Miss Burstall with help from Miss Kiero Moakes and Fraulein Bruhn, Miss Dendy.

 

John Rylands Library

Mr Guppy of the library, whose daughter is a pupil at the school, has offered to show a group of girls the treasures of the library.

Hockey

The teams have been less successful in the matches played [details given]. This is partly due to the retirement of Miss Thring and the absence of Miss Slater.

 

Fives

The courts are now ready and there is a complete set of equipment. Girls will be coached by Miss Slater who was the Fives champion at Newnham.
