The Memorial Service

Description of the memorial service for Queen Victoria held in Manchester cathedral for pupils of the public endowed schools in Manchester.

 

Science

The Board of Education has approved the changes in the teaching of science. A new subject, Natural History is being taught instead of botany. The syllabus was devised by Miss Isa Hiles and she is teaching it with Miss Hartley and Miss K V Moore.

�New honour boards in the Hall of dark green with gold lettering and pitch pine frames have reminded us of those who have distinguished themselves in the past.�

 

Numbers

There are 404 pupils. This number was last reached in March 1895.

 

Concert

The following staff prepared the performers in the school concert: Miss Millar, Fraulein Bruhn, Mrs Byron Cooper, Miss Harrison, Miss Edith Robinson.

The performers were Lieschen Scheerbart, Zillah Smith, Dora Allen, Katherine Robotham, Bertine Polak, Lucy Geiler, Ethel Kerr, Lilian Nicholls, Grace Ashworth, Kate Turner, Jessie Taylor, Ethel Jack.

A Visit to the John Rylands Library

Golden Rule Society

Miss Dendy has agreed to be the Treasurer for another year. The sewing classes have been well attended. Only two thirds of the school have joined the Society.  A soiree was held at the Pendleton High School by their Silver Lining Society.

 

Visit of the Manchester Field Naturalists� Society

Members of the Society visited the school and saw a model elocution lesson and a gym display. They were shown round the school. John Mather was present.

 

Boarding House Party

Miss Shannon and the boarders gave an �at home� evening.

Our Debating Society

Thanks to Miss Lee a debating society has been re-established. The Committee is:

Debate held: "Novel reading is injurious to the mind." Proposed by Jessie Clarkson, opposed by Alice Gowan. Motion lost.

Visit to the Mosley Street Picture Gallery

The IV forms were unable to hear a lecture on art by Miss Jones and therefore were taken to the art gallery [details given].

 

Sara Burstall Lecture

Sara Burstall gave a lecture on Ballades illustrated by Miss Moakes [details given].

 

Parties

There was a children's Christmas party [details given] At the main Christmas party music was provided by Ella Wilkinson, Miss Harrison, Dorothy Parry.

Miss Adamson arranged some national dances.

Part of The Merchant of Venice was performed by the following: Jessie Clarkson, Dora Allen, Isabel Morris, Marion Hawcridge, Constance Moakes, Frances Steele, Jane Mutch, Marion Hargreaves. They were directed by Miss Moakes.

 

Doll Show

An exhibition of dolls and other toys made for the poor by the "ladies of Manchester" and organised by Mrs Hyland was held in school.

 

Gifts to the School

Lectures

Lectures [topics given] were given by Miss Meek and Miss Dendy.

The marriage has been announced of Edith Murchie.

Founders� Day

The meeting was chaired by Dr Wilkins.  

The chapter from Ecclesiastes is quoted in full as it "may not be generally known to the readers of the magazine."

The address was given by Mr Hopkinson.

Hockey

Details given of matches played. Miss Slater and Miss Patterson played in the school team. The members of the First Team are: Sarah Stenhouse, L Mounsey, A Harvey, E Collier, A Taylor, M McNicol, G Geiler, E Greengrass, L Geiler, R Sunderland, E Royle.

The Second Eleven is not yet complete but may include the following: D Lamb, S Morris, L Blezard, J Collier, D Bauerkeller, K Davidson, N Meadows, A Oberdorfer.

�It was decided that the members of the First Team, after having played well in 3 or 4 successive matches, should have the right to wear a special hockey badge in addition to the usual school colours. This badge which was designed by Ethel Greengrass represents an ivy leaf [our school badge] with the initials M H   S G   H C  embroidered in 3 monograms in yellow silk. No badge holder can be turned off the team.�

 

Fives

The first match has been played against Wakefield School. The school was represented by Lucie Geiler, Rita Sunderland, Agnes Taylor.
