The guests included the following: Dr Wilkins [chair of the governors], the Bishop of Hereford, Canon Hicks, Rev S A Steinthal, Alderman Thompson, Alderman Rawson, Prof Dixon, Judge Parry, J E King [High Master of Manchester Grammar School], Mr C F Heywood, Leonard Tatham, John Mather, Mrs F G Buller, Miss Gaskell, Mrs Frank Roby, Mrs W B Worthington, Mr Guppy [librarian, John Rylands Library], Mrs Wilkins, Mrs Pankhurst.
Dr Wilkins said that the school has an unprecedented number of pupils. He called on the government to introduce education reform.

The Bishop of Hereford commented on the changes which had taken place in Manchester in the last 45 years, the high standards of education there and the importance of education with a uniform education system and scholarships for poor pupils. He warned girls not to try to be like boys and lamented the moral decline of the age. [Includes a very detailed account of his speech].
