Editorial        

Owens Gollege will be celebrating its Jubilee, Miss Adamson will receive an MA "in recognition of her long and faithful services to the education of girls in Manchester." [See magazine for July 1902]. The Prince and Princess of Wales will visit the College and will pass the school en route, each girl will wave a bunch of daffodils as they pass.

The Story of the Hymnal

Description of how the school hymnal was compiled. The committee members were:

They received help from Mr Guppy librarian of the John Rylands library. Many hymns were taken from the Grammar School Hymnal which had been used in the school for the last three years, others were taken from "an interesting collection, the Clifton Hymn Book" and also from the hymn book used by the North Manchester school. The hymnal was first used on Founders' Day, 20 January 1902.

Golden Rule Society

The Society has begun to send clothes to the Police Aid Society for Clothing the Destitute Children of Manchester. Work continues for the Nurses� Home and the Children's Holiday Fund.

The Field Club

There have been lectures [topics given] from the following: Prof Dixon, Mary McNicol, Eleanor Sheard, Annie Hallam, Frances Steele, Dorothy Dearden, Janet Sanders, Joan Parry, Philippa Esdaile, Marjorie Dearden, Gertrude Geiler, Constance Moakes, Prof Weiss, Dr Wilkins, Dr Collier.

Prof Hickson has promised to give a lecture.

Prof Weiss donated prizes to the best set of notes made on his lecture. The prizes were won by Mary McNicol and Nellie Meadows.

 

The French Play

Miss Adamson has arranged two sets of actresses for the French play. Those who took part in the dress rehearsal were Alice Gowan, Mabel Blackstock, Frances Steele, Alice Goffe, Madge Rothwell, Lois Lovett.

The School Party

Description of the Christmas party. A French play was produced by Miss Adamson. The parts [details given] were played by the following:  Frances Steele, Olive Schultz, Dorothy Lodge, Beatrice Zerffi, Marion Dore, Dorothy Piggott.

 

Founders' Day

"The whole school assembled in the Lecture Hall and almost everyone wore a piece of ivy, symbolic of the badge chosen for the school. There is not as a rule an abundance of flowers in January and it must have been a difficult matter to select a badge for this time of year, ivy was a happy choice."

The guests who accompanied Miss Burstall were Dr Wilkins, Mrs Buller, Mrs Hopkinson, Mr Donner, Mr King [High Master of Manchester Grammar School].

The school hymn, O Merciful and Holy was sung, the new school hymnal was used for the first time although there were not enough to go round.

The senior prefect, Edith Wainwright read the lesson.

In his speech Dr Wilkins mentioned the scholarships, "a record of which we can see hung on the walls of the very room you daily meet in." The school needs a botany lab, a new gym and electric lighting, each of these will cost £1,000. He spoke of the success of the "domestic economy classes" and the publication of the new hymnal explaining how the hymns had been chosen.

Mr King urged pupils to take an active part in school life.

 

School Concert

The guests at the concert were Mrs Alfred Hopkinson, Mr and Mrs John Mather, Dr and Mrs Kendrick Pyne, Mrs Edward Hicks, Judge Parry.

Details of the music performed given. The performers were taught by Mrs Cooper, Miss Moakes, Miss Edith Robinson, Miss MacGowan.

Miss Burstall gave a speech and mentioned the conferment of an MA on Miss Adamson.

The performers were Lieschen Scheerbart, Dorothy Parry, Amelia Green, Ella Wilkinson, Leonora Smith, Elsie Carrington, Jessie Taylor, Barbara Fiddes, Rachel Stein, Annie Walker, Katherine Barlow, Muriel Bedson, Elsie Simon, Annie Cade, Edith Hill.

 

Marriages

The marriages have been announced of the following: Grace Mellin, Zelda Wise, Ethel Copinger, Annie Lawton.

A birth has been announced to Mrs Julius Dernbacher [nee Ella Horkheimer].
