Owens College Jubilee Degree Day

Description of the degree ceremony at which Annie Adamson received an MA. Includes comments about the small number of women graduates.

Degree Day of the Victoria University

Description of the degree ceremony which was held in the Whitworth Hall for the first time. Previously degree ceremonies had been held in the Free Trade Hall. Among those who received their degrees were Kate Blackstock, Gertrude Dean, Ruth Taylor, Dorothy Holme.

 

Mens Sana in Corpore Sano

Detailed description of the gym competition including a cartoon drawing and descriptions of various exercises. It was judged by Miss Whiteley from London. The prizes included the Challenge Cup, "a beautiful silver bowl" awarded by Prof Dixon "for the girl best in gymnastics." Other prizes were given by junior school mistresses and also by the following: Mrs Dearden, Miss Whitely, Miss Bourne, Miss Hiles.

The participants were Irene Brierley, Annette Allen, Ethel Magus, Rita Sunderland, Dorothy Dearden, Mabel Blackstock, Ethel Kerr, Madge Brierley, Constance Moakes, Margaret Lamb, Lucy Sternfield, Dora Allen.

The winners [details given] were Connie Moakes, Mabel Blackstock, Ethel Magus, Ethel Kerr, Dorothy Dearden, Lilian Guppy, Winnie Young, Dorothy Parry, Marjorie Dearden, Elsa Reich, Annette Allen.

After the competition Miss Burstall gave permission for the girls to wear their "gymnasium dresses" in school. "Some 30 or 40 girls took advantage of this privilege but of late the custom has died off and scarcely more than half a dozen, besides the team, still continue. This seems to some a pity as the costume is healthy, convenient and certainly not 'uncivilized'. We hope that when the school has a recognised gymnasium dress that the girls will again wear it."

Description of the activities including a flower show held in May. The flowers were later taken to local hospitals.

The Visit of the Prince and Princess

Description of the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales who came to Manchester to open the Whitworth Hall. Their procession was diverted down Dover St so that it could pass the school, "each school wearing their own colours and carrying flowers of the same shade."

 

The Open Afternoon

Description of an Open Afternoon for the junior school. Parents attended lessons, heard a concert conducted by Miss Harrison and saw a display of work.

 

Royal Drawing Society of Great Britain and Ireland

At the annual exhibition in London the following received awards [topics of work given]:  Mary McNichol, Dorothy Dearden, Rosie Bauerkeller, Lois Bentz, Margaret Cannon, Gertrude Geiler, Nellie Hallam, Constance Moakes.

 

Gifts to the School

The Thring Cup

"As a memorial to Miss Nora Thring, a silver sup has been presented by her family from funds left by her which will be held annually by the girl who is the best at games, especially hockey. The award will usually be made in December by a committee of girls and mistresses and the donors desire that it shall be given not necessarily to the most brilliant player, but to the girl who has done the most to bring on the team and to encourage public spirit."

 

Dixon Challenge Cup for Gymnastics

Prof Dixon has given a cup for gymnastics.

Because of the greater opportunities for women in public life, there will be a series of meetings on public health, education, women as wage earners and children and the law.

 

The Frances Mary Buss Memorial Scholarship

Caroline Coignou has been awarded the Scholarship given every two years to a qualified teacher in a secondary school. She hopes to go to America next Spring [see Magazine for December 1903].

Musical Exhibitions

"The governors have resolved to give, for 2 years, Musical Exhibitions at the Royal Manchester College of Music and each worth £30. The arrangement is a provisional one intended to encourage the study of music at school. Only those pupils who learn music at school will be eligible and a test of general education will be required."

Training of Teachers

The Order in Council for the Registration of Teachers has made professional training compulsory. Graduates come to the school for practical experience and arrangements have been made for them to do the theory at Owens College. Miss Burstall invites enquiries from prospective students.
