Speech Day and Prize Distribution
Prof Horace Lamb of the Victoria University of Manchester presided. He paid tribute to the work of Prof Wilkins who has retired as chair of governors. He said that they will have to accommodate themselves to the new Education Act. Miss Burstall has become a member of the Manchester Education Committee and Mrs W B Worthington has become a member of the Salford Education Committee. He welcomed the close association between the school and the education department of the newly organised Victoria University.
Large parts of Sara Burstalls speech are quoted. She appealed for more scholarships to pay for school fees, for the establishment of a "women's technical institute of the domestic arts" like that which has been set up at Battersea and for more co-ordination between the education authorities in the Manchester area. She welcomed the trainee teachers who worked at the school and thanked the governors for allowing her to accept the appointment as a special lecturer in the Education Department at Owens College. She said that it has been decided to give book presents to girls in the middle school in order to improve motivation. She described the successes of Marguerite Sunderland at the British College of Physical Education and Evelyn Cooper who has won the Dixon Cup. The governors have agreed to transform the large playroom into a gym but the school still needs a botany lab, greenhouse, books for the library and more science equipment. The Golden Rule Society and the Old Girls' Association are flourishing. She appealed for support for education in general.
Miss Butcher and Miss Clarke gave their reports on the Pendleton and North Manchester schools [details not given].
The guest speaker, Prof Michael Sadler paid tribute to the work of the teaching staff and said that their work was made difficult by constant change. He stressed the role of women in maintaining individuality and the privacy of home life in the face of growing urbanisation.
