Appeal for support.

There are now 434 pupils, this number was last reached in 1892 before North Manchester High School was founded.

Congratulations to the students from Owens College in their Diploma Exam.

An attempt is being made to compile a list of former pupils.

Reading as a Element in Women's Lives

Details of the Address given by Miss Burstall to the Old Students' Guild of Alexandria College, Dublin. Includes the following comments:

women's role is still mainly in the home;

reading is more important to women than to men as it enables them to avoid the narrowness which is caused by their constrained domestic lives and it is a consolation in troubles.

Includes a discussion of the different types of literature and different types of books.

The Gymnastic Competition

Description of the exercises performed.

The competition was judged by Mrs Walenn, ex gym mistress of North London Collegiate School.

The participants [details given] were Dorothy Dearden, Edna Byrom, Winifred Young, Bessie Earnshaw, Susie Taylor, W Young, E Simon, Elsie Eaton, Muriel Hirsch.

Elsie Eaton won the Junior Challenge Cup which was presented by Judge Parry.

Muriel Hirsch won the second prize.

Science Notes

Afternoon science lessons are usually suspended in the Summer term. Miss Coignou took the girls on out - of - school visits in connection with chemistry and botany lessons.

Mr Stenhouse took a group of girls to Rochdale gas works.

A group of girls went to Middlewood. 

 

Junior School

There have been no contributions to the Magazine from the Prep.

There have been two picnics and Miss Rome gave a tea party.  

 

Junior School Natural History Club

Description of the animals which the members of the club look after.

Golden Rule Society

Flowers, magazine and toys have been collected. There was a self-denial in the Junior School to raise money for the Children's Holiday Fund.

Field Club Notes

Talks were given by Miss Coignou and Miss Moore. The annual May Day show was judged by Mrs Buller. A ramble was organised.

Literary Society

At a meeting on Ruskin, papers were read by Lucy Baynes and Dorothy Lamb.

A meeting on Kipling was held

The success of the Society is such that it has been decided to broaden its scope. Thanks for the support of Miss Leach and Miss Drummond.

 

Changes on the Staff

Miss Madge Plummer the most advanced of the secretarial pupils has been acting as assistant secretary to Miss Burstall.

Miss Adamson is inspecting schools for Manchester University.

There have been visits to the school by the following: Miss Hugon [an old girl], Miss Clay, Kindergarten Inspector for Manchester Education Committee, Prof Rein, Arthur Sidgwick, Mme Michaelis "one of the founders of Kindergarten Schools in England," Dr Dearden "of the City Council," Mrs Hogg, Councillor Fildes, new school governor for Manchester Education Committee.

 

Sara Burstall Lectures

Miss Burstall gave four lectures at Owens College on the curriculum at girls' schools and will give a series of lectures on "the oversight of girls."

At the Headmistresses� Conference she spoke on the training of pupil teachers.

At the Conference of the Guild of Alexandra College, Dublin she gave a lecture on reading as an element in women's lives. [see above]

At the Central Hall, Oldham St, Manchester she gave a talk on Christianity and womanhood.
