1904 December

Editorial

There has been a lot of building work, as a result "a fine greenhouse has been rising at the top of the kitchen wing overlooking Portsmouth Street. All this means we are to have a Biological Laboratory for the study of botany and zoology under the proper conditions and that a new Cookery School is being built and fitted up on the middle floor of the wing over the kitchen and scullery. The old Physical Laboratory, as it was originally, has had extra windows in walls and roof put into it and is to be furnished with benches etc. The greenhouse will open out of the laboratory."

The school was inspected by officials from Manchester University and the Board of Education. The inspectors were Mr Cardew, Mr Fletcher, Mr Hards, Mr Allport, Mr Lloyd, Dr Somervell, Miss Degani, Prof Conway, Prof Weiss.

Charles Rowley has loaned the school some valuable paintings.

Mrs C E Schwann, one of the governors, has given the school some pictures.

The Magazine is smaller in an attempt to make up the financial deficit.

Prize Distribution in the Free Trade Hall

The music was conducted by Mrs Byron Cooper.

Dr Lamb paid tribute to the work of Mrs Derbishire.

Manchester Education Committee has given the school 300 for scholarships.

Miss Burstall thanked Mrs Huxley for the gift of £25 "to be spent on some object that will be of permanent use and beauty in the school." She also thanked the Old Girls' Association for the scholarship for girls in the middle school which they have endowed.
