Editorial

The responsibility for compiling the Magazine has been transferred to three members of the Senior VI who have been co-opted to the Magazine Committee.

The new biology lab and cookery school have been opened. The cookery school has "white brick walls, gas stoves and [a] lift."

Miss Patterson has given the school a painting [details given].

Founders' Day

Edward Donner presided in the absence of Prof Lamb.

The guests included Mrs Hopkinson and Mrs F G Buller.

Gertrude Leach, the head prefect, read the lesson.

Prof Conway, the guest speaker gave an address on the purpose of education.

After the ceremony "the girls returned to their classrooms and lessons began as usual."

Kate Duffy

The New Biological Laboratory and School of Cookery

Description of the opening of the new biology lab and cookery school by the Mayor and Mayoress.

The Field Club presented Miss Shann with flowers.

Mrs Cooper provided music.

Miss Burtsall explained the new facilities.

The Mayor and Sir James Hoy spoke on the importance of domestic science.

The Bishop of Salford, Dr Casartelli stressed the importance of hard work.

Mt Tatham proposed a vote of thanks which Prof Dixon seconded. Dr Lamb invited the Mayor and Mayoress to tea.

Miss Coignou has got photographs of the new facilities.

"The girls wore their school sashes and many of them sprigs of ivy."

Golden Rule

Description of the items sent to the Nurses' Home at Ardwick. The Juniors held a collection and IV Upper B had a self denial week to raise money.

The Golden Rule Competition

Description of the toys made for the Golden Rule competition. Mrs Mather gave the first prize. It was won by Annie Mills. The other toys [details given] which won prizes were made by the following:  Frances Rostron, Lillie Letter, Kenneth Lodge, Ethel Thompson, Winifred Ward, Winifred Casson, Gertrude Frazer.

Literary Society

A meeting was held to discuss Ruskin, papers [titles given] were read by K Hothersall and D Royle.

Debate was held, "A lie is never justifiable." Proposed by E Simon, opposed by D Lamb. [Result not given].

A meeting was held at which there were readings by Dickens.

There was a "sharp-practice debate."

Surplus funds will be used to buy books for the library where, thanks to Miss Dendy, the society meets.

Money was raised to set up a "Lake Garden" in the new biology lab.

Joint Debate at the Manchester Grammar School

Thirty girls with Miss Burstall, Miss Lea and Miss Coignou went to Manchester Grammar School for a debate with the boys. They were welcomed by the High Master, Mr Paton and shown round the school [details given].

The debate was "We are better than our forefathers." Proposed by B I Macalpine [Manchester Grammar School], opposed by Lucy Baynes.

Other speakers were Dora Royle, A Kirk, G H D Ascoli, Dorothy Lamb, E Walker, J H Doughty, Miss Lea.

The motion was carried.

School Parties

Description of the school parties. A performance of Comus was organised by Miss Willis and Miss Drummond. VI Transitus performed songs from The Mikado under the direction of Miss Limebeer and Miss Mills. Mrs Cooper played the accompaniment.

Foundation [sic] Day

On the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the school the Old Girls' Association, represented by I Hiles, presented a picture. It is hoped to found a scholarship. Music was provided by Mrs Frischmann, Jeanette Horkheimer and Annie Worsley.

"A badge for life members was decided upon."

A play was performed by the following:  A Eccles, Eva Newton, Dora Knowles, Maggie Hyslop, Ethel Marsden, Ethel Greengrass, Isa Hiles, Muriel Robinson, G Dean, N Hallam, L Wilkinson.

The President has had to leave Manchester and Mrs Tout was elected in her place.

Ten new committee members were elected.

The Secretary resigned and was replaced by E Mack.

A play, dramatised by M Hawcridge, was performed by the following:  M Hawcridge, G Geiler, M Reynolds, A Gowan, E Greengrass.

Miss Day sent a message and evergreens for a meeting.

At a fancy dress party the following wore costumes [details given]:  Mrs Tout, Agnes Spaven, Amy Greengrass, Ethel Tacon, Miss Harrison, Miss Coignou, Miss Tafel.

There are 432 members.
