Annual Meeting in the Free Trade Hall  

Dr Lamb, the chairman of the governors, referred to the new biology lab, the renewed grant of £300 from Manchester Corporation, the inspection, the retirement of Miss Butcher and the closure of North Manchester High School.

Miss Burstall stressed the close relations between the school and Manchester University.

Miss Patterson, Head of North Manchester, stressed the importance of play as well as work.

Miss Butcher expressed regret at her retirement.

Dr Alfred Hopkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Manchester University, said that �success was very often getting something that someone else deserved much better.�

Mr Tatham proposed a vote of thanks and Canon Hicks seconded it.

The Horticultural Show

Description of the school horticultural show at which there were 890 entries to 69 different classes. The judges were the following:  Mr Winwood [Mr Donner's head gardener], Dr O V Derbishire, Miss Fitzsimons, Miss E Wilkinson, Miss Henry, Miss Mary Wroe, Miss Marie Jones.

Donations to the prize fund were made by the following:  Mrs Donner, Mr Paton, Mr Fletcher, Mr Fuller, Mrs Hirsch, Mrs Lucas.

Miss Burstall donated a silver cup which was won by the Seniors and class III Middle  was second.

Appreciation of the return of Miss Hiles because of whom, with Miss Coignou, the Society is what it is today.

The Literary Society

The Society is flourishing. At meetings the poems of Longfellow and papers were read by Edith Wheeler on the paintings of Rosetti and by Greta Elias on his poems. A debate was held on which six books to take to a desert island.

German Society

A German Society has been set up. The committee members are:

At meetings only German is spoken, German cakes are served and German songs are sung. A German reading club has been formed. A "social gathering" was held to celebrate Miss Burstall's birthday [details given].

 

Science Notes

The botany lab is in constant use. There have been gifts [details given] from Mr W H Sutcliffe and Mrs Donner. Description of the animals cared for by Miss Coignou and Miss Robertson.
