Sir Roger de Coverley Visits the School
Description of the school at Dover St. There was "a brass plate on the door which was inscribed Manchester High School for Girls." The girls leaving "wore a yellow ribbon with a black edge in their hats." From the porch "I perceived two flights of steps, one going up and one going down" Down the stairs I "went into a large room where some of the girls were taking off their outdoor garments. I followed up another flight of stairs to a corridor." A bell rang "and everyone seemed to stop talking. Save for the tramping of feet there was no noise at all and in the comparative quiet I noticed that they all made for one place.... a large hall full of benches and with a platform at one end. The room was filled with girls and I noticed that most of them wore short dresses not unlike the tunics I have seen some savages wear.....When prayers were over all the girls marched out....I went round the corner again and into a small chemistry theatre. I went through into the laboratory....but such a villainous smell greeted me that I went out quickly. In the corridor I noticed a door with 'library' on it. I entered. It was calm and peaceful and there were but a few girls studying....I noticed all the classrooms had numbers. A bell ...soon rang and [the girls] ran pell mell down the corridor and into a large room where they had lunch. After lunch they went down into a place which I soon saw was the gymnasium; there they lined up and marched out except some who stayed there and began drilling. ..Outside there was a game that I soon learned was called Basket-ball. They [the girls] fell over and soon had wet feet and muddy faces but they seemed to like it and I hear they play every day."
