Music and Drama

Girls have attended performances of The Tempest and Alkestis and went to a Halle concert. "The new grand piano in the hall is greatly appreciated. At the dinner hour musical recitals it has proved a great asset."

 

Founders' Day

The guest speaker was Douglas Miller, High Master of Manchester Grammar School. The theme of his speech was the meaning of the classical virtue, pietas.

 

The Junior Sixth Plays

Annual Debate with the Manchester Grammar School

Description of the visit of the boys who were accompanied by Mr Collinge and Mr Poskett. The debate was held in the school library "with the busts of Caesar and Augustus frowning at our levity." Miss Lister and Miss Weitzman presided. The topic was "Great men are the curse of civilization," proposed by Jean Cole and Mr Wilson [arguments given], opposed by Mr Cohen and Eveline Buck [arguments given]. The motion was defeated.

Miss Burstall attended the Christmas meeting and mentioned the plan to set up a branch of the Association in Liverpool. Miss Burstall also attended the Easter meeting.

Proposed Old Girls' Missionary Union

Outline of Miss Burstall's plan that a group of old girls should join together "to keep in touch with our missionaries in the field, to remember them in prayer and to work for the increase of our missionary representation." She hoped that it would be modelled in a similar organisation which has existed at North London Collegiate School since 1898. The London Society was founded in June 1923 for old girls and teachers in London. There are 129 members. Meetings are held twice a year.

There was a visit to Windsor at the invitation of Margaret Curtis. Florence Ruscoe is the history teacher at her school, the Girls� County School. Miss Willis also joined the visit. There have been other visits [details given].

Some members of the Society attended the lectures of the Alliance Francaise at which Eluned Jones was presented with a bronze medal for excellence in French.

The Geographical Society was set up in the Autumn term. Talks were given [titles given] including one by Mr Barker. "Owing to the General Strike and railway difficulties only one excursion was made" in the summer term.

Nearly all the new recruits have gained the Tenderfoot and 2nd Class awards. The leader of the Cormflower patrol, M Atkinson, has gained her "all-round" cord. The Company was equal top with another in the district inspection and will be inspected for the Divisional Shield. Hockey matches have been played [details given]. A camp was organised in the grounds of the guide home at Foxlease but had to be cancelled owing to the General Strike. Appeal for support.
