The Bishop of Middleton was unable to be the guest speaker and Mrs Hope Hogg stepped in at three hours notice.

 

Model Assembly of the League of Nations

The school held its first Model Assembly of the League of Nations.

 

Young People's Week

During Young People's Week there were two open afternoons at which visitors saw lessons and exhibitions.

 

Music

The school took part in the Manchester and District Choir Festival for Girls' Secondary Schools [details given]. The school won third place. There was a concert before Parents' Evening [details given] at which the following played:  Mrs Proudlock, Miss Webster, Miss Arthan, Miss Fry, Madame Lamb.    

 

Kamberian Award

"The Kamberian family, Takouhi, Haigouhi, Astra and Adrine, have presented the school with a cup for excellence in speech to be awarded yearly to the form who does best in a competition which may take the form of reading, speeches, recitations or dramatic work. This year the first round of the competition consisted in the reading of a prepared prose passage by every member of the form. For the second round a team consisting of a quarter of the form was chosen to read one prepared passage of prose. The two sets of marks are to be counted together for the final results which are not yet complete."

 

Drama

Details of plays acted by the Student Teachers and the Historical and Literary Society.

 

Sport

The school has won the Manchester and District Girls' Schools Hockey Shield, the Lancashire Schools Lawn Tennis League shield and the Senior Netball Shield.

Members visited the Old Jordans Hostel in Buckinghamshire where Mrs Chapman was the hostess and among the guests was an old girl, Mrs Ffrangcon-Davies whose daughter Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies played the leading role in The Immortal Hour and one of the residents, Mrs Malcolm Sparkes gave a talk on the Quakers.

Description of Miss Burstall's speaking engagements. "The tapestry screen is nearly finished: it is very formal but full of colour and should be all right in the library. The subject for the debate with Manchester Grammar School was "The franchise should be limited rather than extended." It was proposed by Kathleen Pursglove and Marian Higham and opposed by Mr Wilson and Mr Porter. Miss Lister chaired the debate. The motion was lost. Most of the boys supported the right of women to vote at 21.

Musical Society

"Three years ago the League of Music Bobs started in the IIIrds and Upper IIIrds. It has now gone up the school as far as the Upper IVths and as the Music Bobs is only intended for girls from 10-14 it is time for it to grow into something else for the older girls. Accordingly a Music Society is being formed for the Upper IVths upwards. It will meet once a term and the meetings will take the form of lecture recitals and concerts, musical games and competitions and music making of all kinds. Music Bobs will continue for the IVths downwards as before."
