Old Girls' Association

Hon President:  Miss Clarke

Acting President:  Annie Ellis

Vice President :  Kathleen Hammond

Hon Treasurer:  Nancy Ashworth

Hon Secretary:  Nora Hardman

Hon Life Member:  Miss Burstall

There were over 200 members at the Christmas meeting which took place on Founders' Day. It was also attended by Miss Clarke and Miss Burstall who spoke enthusiastically of the joint meeting of the Societies which will take place on Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 June. The Hockey club is flourishing and it is hoped to arrange two games a year. The netball club began in March 1930 and it is hoped that it will flourish. Little has happened yet with the cricket club. The Dramatic Society has a small but keen membership and they produced a performance of Crabbed Youth and Age at the Christmas meeting.

How the OGA Began

Extract from the School Magazine for October 1883: "A meeting of about 30 former pupils took place at Miss Day's house on Tuesday, 25 September to form an Association. The aims of the Association were explained and the following were elected:

President:  Edith Wilkinson

Committee:  Marian Ledward, Matilda Stockfield, Mary Geden, Marion French, Frances Bowring, Ada Kyllman, Beatrice Melland, Nelly Gumpert, Maud Kelly.

Miss Day refused to accept the office as President because she thought all officers should be old girls. The first committee meeting took place at the school on October 1 and among the rules passed was Rule 4 by which no subscription would at present be collected but there would be an entrance fee of one penny at the first meeting to cover expenses."

The School Magazine for June 1884 records that the first meeting of members took place on the evening of Thursday, 27 March 1884. About 120 were present.

At a later meeting the name was changed at the suggestion of one of the oldest members to Old Girls' Association. Philanthropic schemes were set up, to take poor children to the country on Saturday afternoons in Summer, to set up a Children's Holiday Fund and to make two garments a year for the poor. The children's outings continued for some time but it was later decided to give all the money to the Holiday Fund. It was not possible to find enough money to found a girls' club in Collyhurst but many members have worked at Heyrod St Girls' Club since its foundation in "The Tent" on Ardwick Green.

Later magazines record that members went on picnics in Summer and occasional lectures were given by notable men, eg, Leo Grindon and Prof Boyd Dawkins.
