Speech Day

The guest speaker on Speech Day was Councillor Wright-Robinson who spoke of the need for international co-operation.

 

Gifts

Mr and Mrs Nutter have presented the school with a hymn board in memory of Eileen Nutter.

Miss Rapaport presented the school with an electric clock which cannot yet be used because the school is "not yet on the alternating system of electricity supply."

The girls of Heyrod Street Girls' Club who have had a long connection with the school through Miss Bourne have presented the school with a school banner in the school colours "for use in the playing fields."

Mrs Simon has given the school a copy of The Duke by Philip Guedalla.

 

The Lena Peacock History Prize

Miss Peacock of Bury has endowed the school with a history prize in memory of her sister who was a pupil at the school "during 1900."

 

Mr Kawamura

Mr Kawamura, Secretary of the Bureau of Social Affairs in Tokyo, "visited the school to get information respecting the status of women in this country and took some films of the school."

 

The School Hymn Book

The new school hymn book has added greatly to the enjoyment of singing hymns in the morning. Miss Warburton has made some arrangements of Bach hymns.

At the Reunion Meeting in June 1931 it was decided that the Association should be a federation with one president, a federal committee and each centre to have a vice-president and a working committee. Miss Burstall and Miss Clarke attended the Reunion. An open day for old girls was held on the first day of the Reunion. On the following day, Saturday 27 June, there was a service in the hall led by Miss Clarke, Miss Burstall gave an address, a meeting, lunch and cricket and tennis matches at the Playing Fields. In the evening between 300 and 400 old girls with Miss Burstall, Miss Clarke and Mr Padmore attended a gathering of dancing and games.

The last meeting was held at the home of Mrs Ormerod, Miss Burstall and Miss Clarke were there. Those who went to the joint Society meeting in Manchester "spoke of it with great animation" and all were pleased that Philippa Esdaile has been nominated as the first President of the Federation. Mrs Tout has been nominated as an additional Vice President of the London Society. The next meetings will take place in Miss Burstall�s house and Dr Esdaile has organised a venue at King's College of Social and Household Science.

Neither Miss Burstall, Miss Clarke nor members of other Societies were able to attend the AGM which, thanks to Miss Coates, was held in Aigburth Vale High School. Miss Adams, Head of Queen Mary High School, Liverpool spoke of the visit by 12 Headmistresses, including Miss Clarke, to Canada. It is hoped that the visit will encourage English girls to go to Canadian universities and "follow vocations afterwards in the Dominions." The arrangements suggested by the London Society for the Federation meeting in June 1932 were accepted, as was the nomination of Philippa Esdaile as the first President of the Federation. Katherine Hothersall has retired as Treasurer after 3 years of service and has been replaced by Doris Arnold. Members gave £1 1s to the Old Girls' Loan Fund.

The summer meeting took place in the house of Mary Davison [nee Atkinson]. Among those there were Miss Burstall and Daisy Brady [nee Atkinson]. The Society is sorry that Margery Willoughby is leaving the Society to go to London. Ina Milroy was elected Treasurer. Miss Burstall told members a lot about the joint meeting in Manchester on June 26-June 27. The Autumn meeting took place at Wyggeston Girls' School thanks to the Head, Miss Caress. Miss Burstall spoke of her work in the Colonial Office and there was discussion of the proposed Employment Bureau for Old Girls. Miss Caress showed members round the school [details given]. The next meeting will take place in Birmingham by invitation of Miss Tait.

Miss Burstall has been ill and has not been able to write her usual letter. She will be attending Speech Days at the schools of Miss Lister and Miss Mitchell.

Thanks to Miss Smith who has taken over from Miss Fisher. The Cadets had a party at which the guests included Miss Ellis, Miss Hughes and the guides. Thanks to Miss Ellis for helping girls prepare for the astronomer�s badge. Every Cadet has tried to make at least one garment for either the Babies� Hospital or the Golden Rule Society.

Debate held: "This house wishes to censure Columbus for discovering America," proposed by Partricia Goldsbrough and Queenie Massel, opposed by Joyce Bamber and Jane Feingold. Motion lost.

Debate held: "The time has arrived to give India self-government," proposed by Muriel Spurgin and Barbara Jessel, opposed by Gudrun Langford and Norah Binns. Motion lost.

There are a record 156 members of the Society. It is hoped to have joint debates with the Central High School and Manchester Grammar School.

The Society is working differently this year. Plays are read once a fortnight on Thursdays. Members are currently reading three plays [details given]. There will be no major production this year but plays will be performed at lunchtime [details given].

The club had to change its courts in mid season because the new courts are not yet ready. The Senior Tennis Cup was won by D White. The Middle School Cup was won by P Marsden. The school was defeated by Withington in the semi-final of the League.
