Hockey

The hockey team has won the League Shield and was undefeated this season.

 

Model Assembly of the League of Nations

The second Model Assembly of the League of Nations will be held next month.

 

The International Summer Camp

A school party with students from Germany and Denmark will participate in the International Summer Camp at Kiel.

 

Old Girls

The Yorkshire Centre of the Old Girls' Federation held its first meeting this month. The Old Girls Federation has nominated Philippa Esdaile as its first President. She will be the guest speaker on Speech Day. Good wishes to the Federation for its meeting at King's College.

 

Competition to Design Cover of Magazine

There will be a competition to design a new cover for the School Magazine.

Founders' Day

The guest speaker at Founders' Day was the Bishop of Middleton. He spoke of the importance of being interested in one's job but also of having external interests, eg in  disarmament and world peace, the welfare of people and animals and the importance of religion.

The Gymnastic Display

General comments about a visit to Stratford - upon - Avon.

 

International Camp

Description of the forthcoming International Camp. There will be 40 German girls, 10 Scandinavians and 30 English girls of which 15 will be from Pendleton High School and 15 will be from Manchester High School. This is the first time English girls have taken part in a camp.

Miss Burstall's Letter

Miss Burstall is going to help to organise the formation of the Yorkshire Society of old girls which is being formed by Miss Nuttall and Eileen Evans. There are already 40 members. Jessie Skemp [nee Clarkson] is hoping to set up a Western Society based in Bristol. General compliments on the successes of old girls including her belief that "If you educate a woman you educate a family." General comments on her work on the Colonial Office Advisory Committee on Education and the College of Preceptors which is the oldest teachers' association in the country. She plans to hear Philippa Esdiale speak on Speech Day and recalls Mrs Tout being the speaker on Founders' Day.

Miss Burstall was unable to attend recent meetings but her niece, Mrs Plant was there. A hockey dance was held this year for the first time.

Old Girls' Sports Section

There have been two old girls' hockey teams and they include Hilda Grindrod who has been playing for the Lancashire Second Team and Ruth Haring who has been chosen as a reserve for the Lancashire Team. Three members of the old girls' netball team have been chosen for the newly formed Lancashire Women's Netball Team. It is planned to continue the cricket team. Old girls are allowed to play tennis on the school playing fields but should apply to Miss Willis first.

Miss Burstall and Miss Clarke attended the meeting which was held at Crosby Hall, the warden Miss Spurling, arranged for the Society to use the hall and there were over 60 members there. The President of the Federation, Philippa Esdaile, explained the programme of the reunion at Camden Hill. The London Society has appointed A M Clarke to record addresses of old girls so that friends can trace each other again.

The last meeting took place at Birmingham university by invitation of Miss Tait who lectures there. Miss Burstall gave information about Federation meetings. Many still think that an employment bureau should be formed. Miss Burstall thinks it should be based in London. Eileen Evans [nee Threlkeld] and Miss Nuttall are arranging a meeting in Barnsley to form a Yorkshire Old Girls' Society.

New recruits are preparing for the Ranger Test and special groups have been formed to help with morse code and signalling. Miss Bainton visited the company and spoke of the need for people with cadet training in the guide movement. The group performed a pantomime for her. Meetings have been held in Platt Fields to learn about trees, mapping and tracking in preparation for camp at Colwall in August.

A debate was held with Central High School, the motion was, "Any form of advertisement is justified by its success," proposed by M Spurgin and B Hardy [CHS], opposed by B Knowles [CHS] and M Greenhalgh. Motion defeated.

Debate held: "War is essential to the development of the nation's character," proposed by N Walsh and J Feingold, opposed by P Corner and J Bailey. Motion was defeated.

There will be a debate with Manchester Grammar School at which the two speakers will be P Reekie and G Langford.
