Mlle Cauneille has been appointed the school's first French assistant.

 

Out of School Visits

Groups took part in the first International School Camp at Kiel - Schonhagen and the guides and cadets had a camp at Colwall, near Malvern.

 

Model Assembly of the League of Nations

The school held a Model Assembly of the League of Nations.

 

Speech Day

Miss Burstall attended Speech Day and for the first time an old girl, Philippa Esdaile distributed the prizes.

The biennial meeting of the Old Girls' Federation will take place in May. Astra Kamberian will collect news of old girls

Competition for a New Magazine Cover

Details of the rules for the design for a new cover for the school magazine. It will be judged by the following: Alderman E F M Sutton, Miss Ritchie, Miss Saunders, Helen Willows, Marjorie Pear.

 

Hymn Competition

A competition is announced  to write words to five hymn tunes by Bach in the new school hymn book. Miss Warburton will help anyone who is uncertain about the metre.

The Model Assembly of the League of Nations

Detailed description of the Model Assembly of the League of Nations which was held on July 22, 1932. It was presided over by Norman Poole and Gudrun Langford acted as President of the Council.

 

Speech Day

Mr Padmore, the chairman of the governors, spoke of the further cuts in expenses and the free places at the school. Miss Clarke spoke of the school's successes including that of Mary Morrison who had received a Ministry of Agriculture travelling scholarship, the first time this has been given to a woman. The guest speaker was Philippa Esdaile. She spoke of the need for women to take responsibility in the country and of the need to be better individuals, both of which can be fostered in schools.

Old Girls' Societies

Detailed account of Miss Burstall's ideas on the role of Old Girls' Societies and the development of the Old Girls� Federation at the school. She believes that a Society for the South West of England could also be established and Jessie Skemp [nee Clarkson] has agreed to help with this. Also Societies might be established in Scotland, Wales and North America.

The second Federation gathering was held at King's College in June 1932. Philippa Esdaile and her staff organised a "wonderful weekend." Thanks to Miss Burstall and other members of the OGF [details given] another Old Girls' Scholarship of half fees has been awarded this year.

Thirty six of the 169 members attended the AGM including Miss Burstall and Miss Clarke. The London Federation has contributed £5 to the Loan Fund.

A meeting was held at the home of Eleanor Redfern [nee Rhodes]. Miss Burstall was present. Also present was Miss Adams who has been elected President of the Liverpool Soroptimist Society. The AGM was held at Oulton School where Doris Arnold is on the staff. On the retirements of Eva Hollings and Mary Ormerod, Doris Mielziner and Marjorie Morris were elected President and Secretary respectively. Miss Clarke was also present.

The ninth meeting took place in Kings Norton by invitation of Daisy Brady [nee Atkinson]. There were 10 members present including Miss Burstall. Discussion centred on the Old Girls' Scholarship Fund and a small sum was voted to be set aside for it. Miss Burstall gave news of the Federation meetings in London on June 24 and 25. It was agreed that Philippa Esdaile should remain President of the Federation until 1935. Welcome to Isabel Mendelsohn [nee Lisbona] as a new member.

The inaugural meeting was held at Barnsley High School. Between 30 and 40 old girls were invited, 15 attended. Miss Burstall was also there. A constitution was agreed and officers were elected with Miss Nuttall as President. A further meeting was held at the home of Ena Bonser [nee Duthie] who is engaged in research work at Leeds university. Over 20 members attended of whom 7 were zoologists. Also there were Miss Burstall, Enid Almond and Mary Morrison. Money was voted to the OG Loan Fund.  The next meeting will be held at Normanton High School where Susie Brooks is a teacher.

 

The Head Mistresses' Conference

At the Head Mistresses� Conference, papers [details given] were read by Miss Limebeer, Miss Clarke, Miss Caress and Eleanor McDougall. Miss Burstall was also present.

There was a debate with the Manchester Grammar School. Twelve girls went and toured the new buildings before the debate. The topic was "Shaw has had a greater influence on modern England than Kipling," proposed by Mr Sabine and G Langford, ppposed by P Reekie and Mr Miller. Motion lost.

Debate held: "Youth is wiser than age," proposed by Queenie Massel and Patricia Goldsborough, opposed by Mollie Greenhalgh and Jean Heywood. Motion lost.

The topic for the Vth's debate was "It is to be regretted that England is an island," proposed by Sylvia Roditi and Daphne Wilde, opposed by Enid Dobson and Margaret Burgess. Motion lost.

The topic for the next debate will be "All is fair in love and war."
