Student Records

There are 52 volumes of student records in the School Registers and one index volume. They were restored and rebound in burgundy red in 2002 with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

On the verso side of each page is the application for admission to the school. It contains the following:

  • Full name of the prospective pupil
  • Date of birth
  • Address of the parent or guardian
  • Profession or occupation of the parent or guardian. This was invariably the father or other male relative
  • Signature of the parent or guardian and a date
  • Name of the referee for the prospective pupil and then length of time which the referee had known her
  • Statement signed by the parent or guardian concerning religious instruction for the prospective pupil, this is occasionally accompanied by a comment

On the recto side of each page facing the application for admission are lists of dates when the pupil was transferred from one form to the next. These may have been added as an aid to the collection of fees. Comparison with the form lists which are printed in the School Reports shows that the dates are not always reliable.

There are volumes for the years:

1874 - 1926

The index volume contains the following:

  • Alphabetical lists of names
  • The year in which the pupil entered the school
  • The page of the application form
  • The register number of the pupil

Student records were kept on A5 cards between the 1920s and the 1990s. They contain the following information:

  • Full name of the pupil
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Name and occupation of parent or guardian, this was almost invariably the occupation of the father
  • Former school[s] attended
  • Date of admission
  • Public examination results
  • General comments on academic attainment
  • Leaving date
  • Leaving destination
