Old School Magazines

Description of the first School Magazine which was issued in 1878 "by an enterprising little committee of girls, one of whom was Miss Frances Harrison and it contains a short story, essays, riddles, school news and an article on Health during Schooldays from which we learn that girls frequently sat up till eleven doing their homework in gas lit rooms and that because games was not compulsory in girls' schools many preferred to walk about with books in their hands. But that all the girls were not so studious is proved by a passage quoted from the Cambridge Examiners' report upon the first public examination: 'It must not be supposed that teachers are to be held responsible for more than a very small part of the occasional failures.' The youthful editor hopes that the extract may be 'both useful and interesting' to her readers and adds severely, 'If an idle girl does not work and get on as a matter of course her parents lay the blame on her teachers while it is really the girl's own idleness and stupidity or ignorance before she came to the school.'" The article traces the history of the growth of the school in the 4 years of its existence from 50 pupils to 375 and gives a list of mistresses which includes "Miss Bulley who has proved the opposite of her name."

It was planned that the next Magazine would be published in July 1878 but a Magazine was not published until 1883 and Magazines were not regularly published until 1899 when "the Old Girls co-operated in reviving the School Magazine as a link between past and present."
