Sara Burstall visited the school in September 1935. She hopes to attend Founders� Day.

 

Events

Dr Stopford, a governor and also Vice-Chancellor of Manchester University will be the guest speaker on Founders' Day. There has been a successful harvest festival, school concert and a dinner committee has been set up. The Heyrod St Jumble Sale raised £10 for its holiday fund and the Golden Rule Society made garments and gave books and toys "to gladden the hearts of little children and their mothers in the neighbourhood."

Memorial of Founders

Description of a "hand-written inscription which now hangs in a frame on the bottom corridor outside the staff common room" which commemorates the death of Edward Donner and which contains the names of the founders and the inscription "The School was founded December 29th 1874." [sic]

 

Recent Purchases from the Micholl Bequest Fund

Details of items bought with money from the Micholl Bequest Fund. "We think in gratitude of the Donor who some forty years ago left us £100 to provide 'things of permanent artistic value for use in the Studio' said her will."� The designers of the objects [details given] are the following: L Kay, Barnaby Powell, Keith Murray, G Sutherland, Joseph Bourne, Annie Potts, Wedgwood, Osborne.

 

Eira Jupe Memorial Fund

The appeal for the Eira Jupe memorial Fund raised £117 12s. It is not certain how this will be spent.

 

Speech Day 1935

The guest speaker on Speech Day 1935 was Lady Moberly. Her theme was the wisdom of remaining young in spirit. "The rainbow effect of the varied range of colours in the new summer uniform was lively and pleasing and we did not regret the change from the time-honoured white party frock."

The Guide and Cadet Camp, 1935 - Cadets

Description of the Cadet camp at Stanton-in-Peake, near Youlgreave, Derbyshire with Miss Fisher, Miss Fisher's cat, Lucifer and Miss Honeyburne. The camp advisor was Mrs Maine-Price. Sports were arranged by Marjorie Hovell.

Description of the guide camp at Rowsley near Youlgreave, Derbyshire with Miss Fisher, Miss Honeyburne, Miss Malloch and Miss Faulkner. The cook was Miss Perkins.

Inter-School Debate with Manchester Grammar School

A debate was held at Manchester Grammar School. Girls were accompanied by Miss Tiano and Miss Joseph. The topic was, "Sport plays too large a part in modern life," proposed by Mr Rowe and Margaret Burgess, opposed by Marian Nicholson and Mr Moore.  The motion was lost.

"�We are considering the adoption of the Grammar School's policy of chairing our own meetings".

Description of Miss Tuke's travels in S Africa. Information about Miss Doveton who knew Peggy Reekie and of Miss Beamer who was a pupil of Malinowski at the London School of Economics and who is living under the protection of King Sobhusa of Swaziland. Comments about the Old Girls' Societies and the formation of the Federation Fund. Isa Wood has explained this. Description of her work for the Church Training Colleges. She has become more closely associated with the Executive of the Head Mistresses' Association and has been co-opted to the Education and Examinations Sub-Committee. A new Association for Education in Citizenship has been set up by Sir Ernest Simon and she is hoping to remain on its council.

There has been no meeting since the last Magazine It is hoped to set up a badminton club which will meet in the school gym on Tuesday evenings. The Old Girls' Hockey and Netball Clubs both have two teams. It is hoped that Sara Burstall and Miss Clarke will attend the next meeting. Sheila McNicol has been elected Treasurer.

S Burstall came to the meeting and gave her news. Also there was Isa Wood [nee Morrison]. J Skemp [nee Clarkeson] and Mary Morrison attended the Manchester meeting and gave information about it.

The Golden Rule Society.

Thanks to all who contribute to the work of the Society. The annual show of garments made was held on 18 December 1935.

 

League of Nations Union

There are 166 members, including teachers. Papers were given by the Current Events Class and there was time for questions. Leonard Behrens gave a talk on different attitudes to war [details given]. Miss Watson gave a talk of Sweden and Denmark. Miss Ritchie gave a talk on her visit to Russia. It is hoped that members were take a real interest in the Society �especially during this time of League action in the Italo-Abyssinian dispute.�

Music Society

The lunch time recitals have been suspended and there have been gramophone record recitals instead [details given]. Miss Arthan played records by Schnabel. Girls should borrow records from the Music Library which has an �excellent collection.�

 

Florence Rigg [Senior VI]

The Orchestra

Miss Brownson is the new leader of the orchestra and there is one new flautist and another will join next term. There is only one cello. Details given of pieces played and rehearsed.

The increase in numbers of players has necessitated a new pitch. Results of matches played. "The 1st XI has won both matches played in the American tournament section of the League."

Netball

Great enthusiasm is being shown especially "by the lower form in their after school ladder matches." It is hoped that the team will win the League which is being played this year "in American Tournament form." Welcome to Miss Dimmock who has replaced Miss Langton.

Great interest is shown. Life Saving medals were won by Marjorie Hardman and Christine Mason. The individual cups [details given] were won by the following: Joan Hardman, Beatrice Lowry, Ruth Bardsley.
