The Coronation

The coronation has been of interest to the school, the British Empire and the world.

 

Grangethorpe

Fund raising activities [details given] are being held to raise money for the new school building at Grangethorpe. "As an earnest of their reward several forms are able to enjoy lessons in the garden at Grangethorpe on fine afternoons this term." Four sisters of the Marks family have given £1,000. "The final drafting of the plans is proceeding apace."

 

Founders' Day

The guests on Founders' Day were Mr Coatman and Mrs Theo Coatman [nee Pitt].

 

Speech Day

The Bishop of Middleton will be the guest speaker on Speech Day.

Verbatim account of Mr Coatman's speech. His theme was the family, motherhood and the way in which political organisations are like a family.

 

Granegthorpe Meeting, 19 April 1937

Description of a meeting for parents about the move to Grangethorpe. Mr Padmore made a general appeal for support. Prof Webster spoke of the advantages of Grangethorpe. Miss Clarke outlined the history of the school and the fund-raising events. Building a completely new school would cost £70,000. There are two cheaper alternatives, adapting the hospital wards as classrooms with other buildings added later or using all the existing buildings on the site.

The Drill and Gymnastic Display

Description and programme of a gym display at the Whitworth Hall. The participants wore "the present uniform of short-sleeved yellow jumper with black tights, stockings and shoes" which was worn for the first time. Mr Padmore said that this would be the last display in which Miss Bourne would be "�in command."

Enid Dobson and Daphne Wilde [Senior VI Arts and Science]

Empire Rally and Service of Youth

Description of an Empire Rally in London for young people organised by the National Council of Education for Canada. "It was felt that the coronation provided a most appropriate occasion for inaugurating an Empire - wide youth movement with public service and the unity and brotherhood of man as its ideals." The Rally was attended by 8,000 young people. The guests were the following: Stanley Baldwin, Mrs Baldwin, Sir Firozhan Noon, Alfred Noyes, the Duke of Gloucester, Lord Snell, Mr Amery, Earl De La Warr, Mr Lyons.

Stanley Baldwin made his last speech as Prime Minister. Description of a royal procession and a service at Westminster Abbey at which the sermon was preached by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

My First Visit to Grangethorpe

Description of a visit to Grangethorpe to have lessons in the garden. "Entering the gate, we passed by the lodge and went up the drive which was flanked by rhododendrons and flowering shrubs. The house seemed very big and we thought it a pity that it was to be pulled down."

Sara Burstall

Sara Burstall is writing a biography of Frances Mary Buss at the request of North London Collegiate School. The late Bishop Paget has written a preface.

 

Philippa Esdaile

Detailed account of Philippa Esdaile's visit to Uganda and the Sudan as part of the Government Commission of which Lord De La Ware is the chairman. She will give a talk about it at an OGF meeting at which Lady Russell will preside.

At a meeting there was supper and dancing and Miss Clarke of the plans to move to Grangethorpe. There were 50 members at the AGM. The main event of the year was the Old Girls' weekend in April with a meeting, dinner, service and a party.

 

Federation Dinner

A meeting was held hosted by Clara Hornby and with Mrs Bonser in the chair. Miss Ellis gave news of the school.

An AGM was held �as usual the conversation and tea took pride of place and the business was crammed into the last quarter of an hour.� Bessie Brown [nee Fulton] invited members to her house. There was a mistake [details given] about the venue for a meeting much to the consternation of the maid at whose house they arrived. They were entertained by Mrs Greenhill. Welcome to Mollie Martin [nee Gibson]. Sara Burstall will be visiting schools [details given] at which Margaret Ward, Miss Ewing and Ethel Barlow are teachers. Regret at the death of Madge Little [nee Roberts].

 

The Western Society

Seven members attended a meeting, at the invitation of Mrs Skemp it was held at Manor Hall, Bristol. Support for the suggestion put forward by the Midland Society that all Societies should be notified of all meetings. Because members are so scattered it was decided that nothing jointly could be done to support the Grangethorpe appeal.

A debate was held with Manchester Grammar School: "Chivalry is a nuisance to men and an insult to women," proposed by Mr Whitehead and Joan Smith, opposed by Sylvia Bernard and Mr Rose. Motion defeated.

Debate held: "The family is more important than the individual for the welfare of the state," proposed by Margaret Lord and Margaret Barker, opposed by Mary Mellor and Sylvia Bernard. No result given.

Debate held with the Old Girls: "Woman is the slave of fashion,"� proposed by Betty Hyman and Patricia Goldsbrough, opposed by Christine Edlin and Marjorie Owen. Result drawn.
