Retirements
Miss Marten and "West" have retired. The latter has been a caretaker at the school for 37 years. Mrs West �s connection with the school is even longer and dates from the time of Elizabeth Day.
Grangethorpe Appeal
Because of the "international crisis of late September," the launching of the Grangethorpe Appeal was postponed from 24 October 1938 to early February 1939.

Prefects
Voting for prefects has been replaced by giving prefect status to all Senior VI subject to satisfactory conduct.
School Council
A School Council has been set up "with graded representation from different sections of the school." The Head Prefect presides, one Deputy is the Vice Chairman and the other Deputy is the Secretary. The Council meets every three weeks. The last meeting was attended by a traffic inspector who discussed the problems of travelling by tram to and from school.
Cathedral Service
The cathedral service for the Girls' Secondary Schools was held on 1 October and for the first time a girls' choir was set up to sing. Thanks to Dr Wilson and to Dr Garfield Williams, the Dean of Manchester who preached the sermon in place of Dr Whale.
Harvest
After the "keen anxiety of the days of crisis" the harvest contributions were bigger.

The Retirement of "West".
Appreciation of the work of Mr and Mrs West. Mr West came to the school 37 years previously as under-porter to Mr Millward who "acted as a somewhat terrifying guardian of the gates as the girls entered the school in the morning." Mr West became known as 'erbert.

Music Notes
The school took part in a choral festival and an orchestral festival. The adjudicators were Mr Gilkes, Noel Walton and Miss Higginbottom. Music competitions took place in an afternoon and instead of asking an outside adjudicator to judge the entries, a committee consisting of Miss Clarke and the music staff were the adjudicators. Old Girls' Badminton Club
The Badminton Club is in its 4th season. Miss Clarke allows old girls to play on Tuesday evenings from 6.00 to 9.00. The subscription is 5s and includes shuttles.
Old Girls' Hockey Club - Old Mancastrians
Miss Mellor is the President of the Old Girls� Hockey Club. The captain is Hilda Grindrod and the vice captain is Betty Duff. Regret at the loss of I L Dimmock. Miss Barlow and Miss Pallot are members of the club. Details of matches and subscriptions.

Debate with Manchester Grammar School held: "This house welcomes the government's move to spread British ideas abroad," proposed by Mary Jackson and unnamed pupil of Manchester Grammar School, opposed by an unnamed pupil of Manchester Grammar School and Sylvia Bernard. Motion lost.
Debate held: "Liberty is the basis of all civilisation," proposed by Eileen Caldwell and Vera Lamb, opposed by Barbara Seddon and Mary Jackson. Motion lost.
A V form debate was held in which two motions were discussed instead of the usual one. Regret at the loss of Miss Malloch. Welcome to Miss Leigh. Thanks to Mrs Herbert "for her chairmanship and advice."
Dramatic Society
The Society presented a performance of Ambrose Applejohn's Adventure. Because of the new interest in current affairs "following upon the crisis" and the formation of the News Society members have had less time to spend on drama.

Two meetings have been held at Grangethorpe. A Division Service was held at which Cicely K Brooks gave a talk. Two guides represented the group at a rally [details given] for guides in Tatton Park which is owned by Lord Egerton. Many guides have achieved their First Class badge. The group participated in the Rusholme District Guide Sports.

The News Society
Because of the "rather negative role which the League [of Nations] is playing" in the current situation and the confusing nature of the events, a News Society has been set up. There are to be meetings every fortnight and open discussions. Miss Whiteley will explain any difficulties. There have been two meetings about the Treaty of Versailles and the state of post-war Germany.
