Sara Burstall died on 26 March 1939 at the age of 79.
Events 1939-1941
In 1939 the school was evacuated to Cheadle Hulme School. In September 1940 the new buildings at Grangethorpe were occupied for a term. Since the school at Grangethorpe was destroyed, the school has carried on in three large buildings in Didsbury. Since 1939 the school has functioned in 19 buildings.
Preparatory Department
Since the Prep moved to Didsbury, a primary class for boys as well as girls has been introduced. This may be extended to later ages.
Governors
Mr Padmore who was the chair of governors since 1919 retired in September 1940. His place has been taken by Prof Fleure whose two daughters are old girls. The Treasurer, Mr J G Crozier, resigned in early 1939 and has been replaced by Mr C Clegg. Miss G B Ayr has also resigned from the board of governors.

Ruth and Mary Hewitt "lost their lives when their house in London was bombed early this year: Mary Hewitt was one of the founders and moving spirits of the London Society of the OGF and she remembered the school most generously in her will."

Founders' Day 1939
Founders' Day was held in the Whitworth Hall. The speaker was Dr Guy Warman, Bishop of Manchester. His theme was the qualities needed for life.
Founders' Day 1940
Founders' Day was held in the Congregational Church, Cheadle Hulme. The speaker was Rev J M Phillips, his theme was courage and faith. Joan Coatman presided in the absence of Mr Padmore.
Founders' Day 1941
Founders' Day was held in Holy Innocents Church, Fallowfield. The guest speaker was the Rector, Rev J R H Moorman. His theme was building a new society.

Dr J L Paton said of her at the memorial service which was held at St Martins-in-the-Fields that "She takes her place in the high succession of the pioneers who opened the way for womanhood in the last three generations - a noble company."�

The Debating Society has been inactive for the last two years but was revived in 1941.
Debate held: "Too much stress is laid on physical training in the world today." Motion defeated.
Debate held: "Industrialism is the menace of modern civilization." Motion carried.
Debate with Manchester Grammar School held: "Co-education is the best form of education,"� proposed by Patricia Lord and Stanion [sic], opposed by Truman [sic] and Vera Burawoy. Motion carried.

Cadets and Guides
Miss Malloch has taken over the captaincy of the guides. Each company has contributed to the air ambulances which the guide movement have bought. Meetings have continued at Grangethorpe and at Broomfield. Details of badges gained including War Badges. An indoor camp has been planned at Osbaldeston for guide patrol leaders.

Games 1939-1941
Team practices take place regularly but because of the war there are few matches against other teams. Games conditions at Grangethorpe were difficult because the playing fields at Birchfields Rd "were too far away and had insufficient air-raid shelter."
Hockey
Hockey was played on the Cheadle Hulme hockey pitch and lacrosse pitch when the school was evacuated there. When the school was at Grangethorpe in the Autumn term 1940 hockey was played in Platt Fields park and occasionally at Birchfields Rd. The First Team won all their matches except one which was drawn. In January 1941, when the school was evacuated to Didsbury, hockey was played at Fog Park but often without goalposts. Hockey has "suffered greatly since Christmas as Miss Mellor has been unable to coach."
Netball
When the school was evacuated to Cheadle Hulme, netball was played on the Cheadle Hulme netball courts.
Cricket
When the school was evacuated to Cheadle Hulme, cricket was played on the Cheadle Hulme lacrosse pitch. When the school was evacuated to Didsbury, cricket only the Upper School was able to play at Withington Girls� School. Cricket has "suffered greatly since Christmas as Miss Mellor has been unable to coach."�
Rounders
When the school was evacuated to Didsbury, rounders was played instead of cricket by the Middle and Lower School.
Tennis
When the school was evacuated to Cheadle Hulme, tennis was played on the local tennis courts. When the school was evacuated to Didsbury, tennis was played on the 3 hard courts at Emmanuel Tennis Club. It was also played every afternoon in Fog Park.

Swimming
When the school was evacuated to Cheadle Hulme, the Cheadle Hulme swimming pool was used and the standard of swimming improved [details given]. Irene Whittaker was the first member of the school to gain the Award of Merit and the First Class Instructor's Certificate. A gala was held in 1939 at High St baths in which Mr A Towny, the captain of the Egyptian Olympic swimming team and Sunny Lowry took part [details given].

Manchester High School National Savings Group
A National Savings Group [details given] was set up in 1940. "It is hoped that the enthusiasm produced by the recent War Weapons drive will continue."

School Charities
A Penny-a-Week fund has been set up and from the money raised wool is brought and donations have been sent to the Babies� Hospital, the Greek Relief Fund and Broughton House. Wool has been received from the Red Cross Society and the Punch Comforts Fund. Over 200 garments [details given] have been made for the army, air force and merchant navy. Knitted garments have also been made for the Duchess of York Hospital for Babies, for Polish refugees and for evacuees. The school is considering sending a weekly parcel to a prisoner of war.

Gifts continue to be sent to Broughton House but visits are not possible. The number of residents has been increased to 55 because men from another home which has been bombed have been taken in.

The Spelling Bee
Description of a spelling bee competition held in 1939 to raise money for Grangethorpe. It was chaired by Joan Coatman, "one of our old scholars" and now Regional Director of the BBC.

Old Girls' Federation News
During the evacuation to Cheadle Hulme "and the occupation of the old school premises by the recruiting officials" reduced the activities of the Manchester Society. Meetings were held at Grangethorpe and at Broomfield. The Sara Burstall Memorial Fund has reached £237. "Five hundred new chairs were bought for the School Hall and those who paid for a chair [7s 6d] have their name recorded on it."
The Midland branch met at the flat of Miss M Walker. E Tower [nee Sugden], A Ellis, P Mather, Miss Fisher and others were there. The Midland president, E Tower [nee Sugden] was in WVS uniform.
The London branch met at the house of Elsa Plant [nee Burstall].
A meeting of the Western Society took place at the invitation of Mrs Skemp. London members who have been evacuated attended.
A joint OGF and Manchester Society committee was held at the house of Annie Ellis. A record of the names and addresses of members could not be published. R Barlow, the secretary, would be glad to hear of changes of members� addresses.
