These are the accounts of what was spent at Manchester High School in the Autumn term, 1894. Such accounts had to be approved by the governors of the school at their meetings. These accounts were submitted to the governors at their meeting on 7th November 1894. Once they had been approved they were written down with the other minutes of the meeting. The minutes of a meeting are a record of what was said.
The accounts have been very carefully written in script writing. The man who wrote it was the Clerk to the Governors. He used a dip - in pen and ink so it would have taken a long time.
Victorian children had lessons in script writing. Handwriting was very important in Victorian times because almost everything was hand written and it was important that other people could read someone else?s handwriting. Script writing is easy to read and is very attractive to look at.
Children started to learn to write when they were learning to read. At first they wrote on slates using chalk because this was cheaper than paper. Children would learn to write by copying an alphabet. They would have a copy book in which to do this.
Tasks
The script writing which children learnt at school was similar to the font Palace Script MT on a computer. You could learn to do script writing yourself by copying this.
