This photograph shows the Manchester High School tennis team holding the shield which they had won at the annual tournament of the Lancashire Girls' Schools Lawn Tennis League in 1899.

The girls would have played in the clothes that they are shown wearing. Such clothes were typical of the Victorian period. It was thought to be more important that a girl dressed in a modest manner than that she was comfortable and could move easily when she played.

The tournament

This article from the Manchester High School Magazine describes how the school won the shield again in 1901.

The tournament of the Lancashire Girls' Schools Lawn Tennis League was held this year in Victoria Park, Manchester on the first Saturday in July.

Play commenced at 10.00 by which time several hundred spectators were assembled. We were there in great numbers to back up our champions, Ethel Greengrass and Mary McNicol. It was a fine, bright morning. We were very excited.

Manchester High School won the first round without much difficulty. We then won two more rounds to reach the final which was against Bolton School. The eager cries, "Play up, Bolton!" and "Keep it up, Manchester," rang through the air. At last the strain was over. We won the shield! Our champions were the heroes of the day! We all joined in the cheering and clapping.
